It was an early Tuesday morning, August 9th, 2011. I was in the Dallas area to bring my 7-year old granddaughter, AUBREE, back to my house in Corpus Christi for a few days vacation. We left the area about 4am to get a jump on the heat wave we’d been experiencing. We were about 45-minutes into the trip, between Corsicana and Waco. I was driving my 2000 Nissan Altima in the left lane of I-71 with my cruise control set at 73-mph. I had been behind a semi-truck for some time, when he put on his turn signal and gradually began to merge into the center lane. As soon as he had cleared my path, DIRECTLY in front of me, was a WHOLE TRACTOR TIRE in the center of my lane. It might as well have been a brick wall just inches from the front of my car….
There was absolutely NO reaction time allowed, and I hit the tire going 73-mph. On impact, my car was lifted up off the road. The noise from the scraping metal underneath my car, and the screeching of the inside of my tires against the tractor tire, sounded like a head on collision! At that very moment, my last thought was, “…so, THIS is how you die instantly”.
I screamed. Aubree, whom I had been talking to from the back seat, was yelling, “What’s Happening?! What’s Happening?!” Then, just like that, we were on the other side of it….still on cruise control, going 73-mph!
I was totally stunned! For a moment, I wasn’t sure if we were up or down-dead or alive. I gathered myself as quickly as I could, asking Aubree if she was all right. She was. I asked her to keep a lookout for an exit we could take that had someplace we could pull over. She spotted a Sonic restaurant, not yet open, but we pulled in anyway. We got out of the car and sat at the picnic table, discussing what had just happened to us. Aubree then tells me that her great, great, great Grandfather (she calls him “Pa-Pa”), is her guardian angel, and that HE saved our lives.
Having experienced the power of an angel before (and, with no better explanation for what had just happened to us), I asked Aubree to tell me more about “Pa-Pa”.
According to Aubree, “Pa-Pa” has been communicating with her since she was four. He’s identified himself to her as her Great, Great, Great Grandfather (“three great’s”), who along with her Great Grandmother (“one great”), are her guardian angels, and that it was HIS job to “protect and look after her, and keep her safe from harm”. I asked how she knew it was him who had just helped us out, and she said that she had been nervous about leaving home because she had never been away that long before, and “Pa-Pa” told her not to worry, that he would be with her to keep her safe. Aubree also mentioned that while she calls him “Pa-Pa” he refers to himself, and her great Grandmother, as “angels”.
Well…Aubree had certainly given me something to think about for the remainder of our 6-hour trip to Corpus Christi.
Before we hit the road again, I got a flashlight out of my trunk to see what damage had occurred to my vehicle following the collision with the tractor tire. The undercarriage of my car appeared to be intact, with the exception of a cracked grill plate just underneath my front bumper. On the bumper itself, was a dark brownish-black rub mark with scratches that spanned the width of my car from outside tire-to-tire.
It clearly appeared to me that the tractor tire had ‘sucked in’ or my car had ‘spread out and up’ to accommodate an object that couldn’t possibly have fit the space in which it had passed. I was dumbfounded! And amazed at the same time.
The remainder of our trip home went well and without incident, but I could not get the thoughts of what had occurred out of my mind.
When we got to my apartment in Corpus Christi, we checked in with my son, Andrew (Aubree’s dad) and, my Mother, who also resides in Corpus Christi. I told them both about hitting the tire, but didn’t go into great detail as to not alarm a constantly present Aubree as to how much danger she had actually been in. I also felt I needed a little more time to process the experience.
I went to bed that night thanking God – and “Pa-Pa”! – for another night in my own bed. I fell asleep still shaking my head in disbelief, and overwhelmingly grateful to still be alive!
The following day, Wednesday, August 10th, we got up with a busy schedule ahead of us. The overnight had allowed me time to gather my wits, and I woke up refreshed and anxious to get on with our day.
That night, Aubree and I sat on the floor of my apartment, facing each other, playing our EIGHT-HUNDREDTH game of Barrel-of-Monkeys. I had just finshed my turn, and looked up at Aubree to pass her the “lucky-monkey”. Standing directly behind her, I saw a man! It was just for a quick flash, but obvious enough to where it startled me and forced a gasp. Aubree immediately asked me what was wrong. I didn’t want to SPOOK her, and simply told her that for a split-second, when I looked up at her, I thought I saw a man behind her…but, obviously…there was no one there…(crazy, huh?!?)… Aubree asked me, very mater-of-fact like, “What did he look like?” I told her, that it wasn’t really like that … it was kind of a ‘blurry outline’ type of figure. But, I could tell it was a man, ...and, he was wearing a hat. She asked, “Was it a cowboy hat”? I said, “yes”. She said, “THAT’S my guardian angel”.
